Dehydration

Treatment Options

Oral rehydration solutions
IV fluids (severe)

Gradual return to bland diet (BRAT)
Antiemetics
Antidiarrheals (adults only)
Zinc supplements (children)

Risk Factors

2Close contact with infected person
3Contaminated food/water
4Crowded conditions
5Daycare centers
6Cruise ships
7Weakened immune system
8Travel to developing countries

Diagnostic Methods

  • 1Clinical diagnosis
  • 2Stool culture (to rule out bacteria)
  • 3Stool PCR/rapid tests
  • 4Blood tests (severe cases)
  • 5Electrolyte panel

Prognosis

Excellent. Self-limiting, resolves in 1-3 days. Dehydration is main risk, especially in young children and elderly. Rare complications. Rotavirus vaccination has greatly reduced mortality.

Prevention

  • Hand washing (especially after bathroom/diaper changes)
  • Rotavirus vaccination (infants)
  • Safe food handling
  • Safe drinking water
  • Disinfect contaminated surfaces
  • Stay home when sick
  • Avoid preparing food when sick

Research Status

Supportive care - no specific antiviral. Oral rehydration critical. Rotavirus vaccine significantly reduced pediatric deaths. Norovirus vaccine in development. Research on zinc supplementation in children ongoing.
