Orthopedic Condition

Spinal Stenosis

MODERATE

Narrowing of the spaces within the spine, putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves. Most commonly affects the lower back (lumbar) and neck (cervical). Causes pain, numbness, and muscle weakness. Usually age-related degenerative changes.

Symptoms

Back pain
Leg pain (sciatica)
Numbness/tingling
Muscle weakness
Pain worse with standing/walking
Pain relief when sitting/bending
Neck pain (cervical)
Balance problems (cervical)
Bowel/bladder issues (severe)

Treatment Options

Physical therapy
NSAIDs
Epidural steroid injections
Activity modification
Laminectomy
Spinal fusion
Laminotomy
Interspinous spacers
Decompression surgery
Pain management

Risk Factors

1Age >50
2Osteoarthritis
3Heredity (small spinal canal)
4Previous spine surgery
5Trauma
6Rheumatoid arthritis
7Tumors
8Paget's disease

Diagnostic Methods

  • 1MRI (gold standard)
  • 2CT scan with contrast
  • 3CT myelogram
  • 4X-rays
  • 5Physical examination
  • 6Electromyography (EMG)

Prognosis

Variable. Conservative treatment effective for many. Surgery provides good relief for leg pain (>80% improvement). Surgery less effective for back pain alone. Progressive condition without surgery.

Prevention

  • Regular exercise
  • Weight management
  • Good posture
  • Proper lifting techniques
  • Core strengthening
  • Smoking cessation
  • Calcium/vitamin D

Research Status

Conservative treatment first: physical therapy, NSAIDs, epidural steroid injections. Surgery (laminectomy, spinal fusion) for severe symptoms or progressive neurological deficit. Minimally invasive options available. Decompression surgery has good outcomes.
