Lichen Planus

An inflammatory condition affecting skin, hair, nails, and mucous membranes. Characterized by purplish, itchy, flat-topped bumps. Oral lichen planus affects mucous membranes. Can be triggered by hepatitis C, certain medications, or flu vaccine.

Diagnostic Methods

Prognosis

  • Avoid triggering medications if possible
  • Stress management
  • Regular dental/oral exams (oral form)
  • Sun protection
  • Avoid trauma to skin

Research Status

Topical corticosteroids first-line. Oral corticosteroids for severe cases. Phototherapy effective for widespread disease. Treat underlying hepatitis C if present. Regular monitoring for oral cancer in mucosal forms.
