Sore throat
Difficulty swallowing
Ear pain
Lump in neck
Persistent cough
Bad breath
Shortness of breath
Coughing up blood

Treatment Options

Surgery (laser, partial/total laryngectomy)
Radiation therapy
Chemotherapy
Chemoradiation
Immunotherapy
Targeted therapy
Speech therapy
Neck dissection

Risk Factors

1Tobacco smoking
2Heavy alcohol use
3HPV infection
4Age >55
5Male gender
6Gastroesophageal reflux
7Occupational exposures
8Poor nutrition
9Weakened immune system

Diagnostic Methods

  • 1Laryngoscopy
  • 2Biopsy
  • 3CT/MRI of neck
  • 4PET scan (staging)
  • 5Chest imaging
  • 6HPV testing
  • 7Barium swallow

Prognosis

5-year survival 60% overall. Early (localized): 80-90%. Regional spread: 50-60%. Distant metastasis: 30-40%. Glottic (vocal cord) has best prognosis. Supraglottic (above) has higher spread risk.

Prevention

  • Smoking cessation
  • Limit alcohol
  • HPV vaccination
  • Healthy diet
  • Avoid occupational exposures
  • Regular dental checkups
  • Prompt evaluation of hoarseness

Research Status

Treatment depends on stage and location. Early: radiation or laser surgery. Advanced: combined surgery, radiation, chemotherapy. Larynx preservation protocols when possible. Immunotherapy for recurrent/metastatic disease. HPV-related cases have better prognosis.
