Hematologic Disorder

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

HIGH SEVERITY

Formation of a blood clot in a deep vein, usually in the legs. Can lead to pulmonary embolism, a life-threatening complication. Part of venous thromboembolism (VTE). Requires immediate anticoagulation.

Global Affected

10.0M

Countries

15

Symptoms

Leg swelling
Leg pain/tenderness
Warmth
Redness/discoloration
Surface vein dilation

Treatment Options

Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs)
Warfarin
Low molecular weight heparin
Thrombolysis
IVC filter
Compression stockings

Risk Factors

1Recent surgery
2Immobility
3Cancer
4Pregnancy/postpartum
5Hormonal therapy
6Obesity
7Smoking
8Inherited thrombophilia
9Previous DVT/PE

Diagnostic Methods

  • 1Duplex ultrasound
  • 2D-dimer test
  • 3CT venography
  • 4MRI venography
  • 5Wells score for pre-test probability

Prognosis

With anticoagulation: recurrence risk reduced by 80-90%. Post-thrombotic syndrome in 20-50%. Pulmonary embolism can be fatal. Extended prophylaxis often needed for ongoing risk factors.

Prevention

  • Mobility after surgery
  • Compression stockings
  • Pharmacologic prophylaxis
  • Hydration
  • Avoiding prolonged immobility

Research Status

Anticoagulation mainstay (DOACs preferred over warfarin). Thrombolysis for massive iliofemoral DVT. IVC filters when anticoagulation contraindicated. Compression stockings for post-thrombotic syndrome prevention.
